Surgical First Assistant (PRN)

Role Overview:
This position involves serving as a perioperative registered nurse and first assistant during surgical procedures. The RNFA collaborates closely with surgeons, providing intraoperative patient care, performing focused pre-op assessments, and managing perioperative plans. It requires delivering safe, effective, and efficient care while monitoring patient responses and modifying plans as needed. The role emphasizes teamwork, professional development, ethical practice, and patient advocacy.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting surgeons intraoperatively as part of the surgical team.
  • Conducting preoperative assessments and communicating patient outcomes.
  • Participating in care planning, safety measures, and evaluating patient progress.
  • Administering medications per standards and managing individual care plans.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional education and contributing to peer growth.
  • Incorporating research and ethical principles into practice, advocating for patient safety, and providing leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Educational requirements: Nursing diploma or associate’s degree; bachelor’s preferred.
  • Experience: 2-5 years in a relevant setting; RN licensure required.
  • Certifications: RN license; preferred certifications include Certified First Assistant, CNOR, or Certified RN First Assistant.
